EZULWINI – Following the launch of the post-COVID-19 Eswatini economic recovery plan, it is implementation time.

Over a fortnight ago, the country launched a plan for saving the economy out of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has disrupted livelihoods and set the economy on a precarious path.

The plan is simplya E30 billion plus stimulus package that is meant to restore and accelerate productive economic activities so that the economy can regain the much needed momentum.

Yesterday at Eswatini Revenue Authority (SRA) offices in Ezulwini, as Chairman of the Delivery Unit; Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade Manqoba Khumalo formally forged the partnership between government and the private sector to set off on a hard but ‘necessary and achievable journey of implementing the Post-COVID-19 Kingdom of Eswatini Economic Recovery Plan.’

“People are watching in all their respective corners of our economy and society in Eswatini. Our neighbouring countries and the rest of the world are also all eyes and ears eager to see what will become of the recovery plan. The nation welcomed the economic recovery plan with a lot of excitement but also with a noticeable level of anxiety because people wonder what will be different this time around,” the minister said.

The minister conceded that people had seen government developing world class strategies and policies only to fail at implementation.

implementation

“The purpose of the Delivery Unit is all about one simple thing: implementation! Implementation is about untying bottlenecks, facilitating improvements in the ease of doing business, and doing everything in our power in our different institutions and work stations to ensure speedy and on-time delivery of the recovery plan,” stressed the minister.

The minister urged each one of the delivery unit and work groups to become champions and sponsors of the recovery plan so that everyone could subscribe to the same notion and urgency of implementing it.

The delivery unit, as announced by Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini, has different components. It directly reports to an investment committee made up of Cabinet members from the identified key growth sectors. The Chairman of the Investment Committee is Minister Khumalo.

The Delivery Unit consists of five Work Groups that will be chaired by Victor Nxumalo – Acting Secretary to Cabinet – for Government projects; Nathi Dlamini from Business Eswatini for private sector-led projects; Thuli Dladla from the Federation of Eswatini Business Community for ensuring micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) participation and benefits out of the recovery plan. Bhekizwe Maziya (Youth Fund CEO) is responsible for identifying opportunities for Eswatini’s youth to benefit from the recovery plan.
