MBABANE – Eswatini ranked ninth among the top 13 African countries with the best infrastructure on the African continent.
This is according to the 2019 World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Report: Infrastructure. Covering 141 economies, the Global Competitiveness Index 4.0 measures national competitiveness—defined as the set of institutions, policies and factors that determine the level of productivity.

Infrastructure is necessary for its economy to function and it is composed of public and private physical improvements such as roads, railways, bridges, tunnels, water supply, sewers, electrical grids, and telecommunications (including Internet connectivity and broadband speeds).

According to the rankings, Egypt, Morocco and Mauritius are ranked top in Africa in this category. Neighbouring South Africa took fourth position.
Eswatini is ranked higher than one of its Southern African Customs Union (SACU) counterpart, Botswana. The latter are on position 10, while Cape Verde, Kenya, and Rwanda are at the lowest rung of the list.

The better rank in terms of infrastructure is a welcome change following an unwelcome rank on the Ease of Doing Business Index. Eswatini retrogressed four places in the World Bank Ease of Doing Business report released last year.

The report reflects that the kingdom is ranked 121 out of 190 countries.
The Ease of Doing Business Report is one of the yardsticks used by investors in measuring the conduciveness of a country’s business environment. It is regarded as the best measurement by most investors.

Meanwhile, it was earlier reported that Namibia led the list of top 13 countries on the African continent that can boast of good roads. Egypt, a country that has been making recent lists for other social amenities, took the second position. Others in the top five positions on the list are Rwanda, Morocco, and Mauritius. Countries like Kenya, Senegal, South Africa, Algeria, and Tanzania also made the cut.

In another list, Nigeria topped eight countries with the biggest economies in 2019 in Africa. Nigeria led while South Africa and Egypt ranked second and third.
