HOW WILL CHURCHES, TAXIS BE TAXED?
EZULWINI - One of the most stimulating debates on the first day of the Eswatini Economic Conference 2019 centred on tax collection, and how churches and public transport operators could be taxed.
This was after a presentation by the Commissioner General of the Eswatini Revenue Authority (SRA), Dumisani Masilela ,during a public lecture on ‘Domestic Revenue Mobilisation: Focusing on the Current State and Opportunities for the Future’.
One of the delegates, Sibongikhosi Ndzimandze, commenting on the presentation by Dumisani Masilela on Domestic Revenue Collection asked about how the Eswatini Revenue Authority would tackle churches on taxation.
“I have seen quite a number of issues that pertain to the church.
Meet
“Some people have a Bible on one side and church on the other side yet those do not meet, who is fooling who? Let the church be taxed because it is a business,” he said.
Masilela said they too had noted that there were genuine churches then there were businesses. He explained that churches were exempt but once they started behaving like a business then they must be taxed.
“We exempt certain entities but you submit your accounts and we see if you are still behaving like a church, so regular churches are not taxable,” he said.
Concern
Another concern raised by the delegates during the question-and-answer session was how the authority was handling public transport operators.
Masilela said the public transport industry was one of their biggest headaches, however what could help solve it was that most of them were licensed. “We will work on our database to ensure that they are integrated in the tax base since most systems are now computerised and once aligned, everyone will be visible to us,” he said.
It was also advised by some of those in the audience that once new sources of tax were found, this should translate in a reduction of taxes to existing taxpayers.
