EZULWINI – Government has made an undertaking to settle its arrears in full within a year.

This commitment was made by Prime Minister Mandvulo Ambrose Dlamini in the 2019-2022 strategy roadmap. He strongly emphasised on the urgent need to pay up what is due with a view to bolster the economy for the better.

“It is our intention to see into it that arrears are settled in full to unlock the private sector which will be the key driver of our economy going forward,” Dlamini assured.

The PM also mentioned that a core function of the strategic roadmap was to bring government expenditure and revenue to sustainable levels.

Player

“As government is the largest player in the economy of Eswatini, streamlining its function is crucial for the success of our recovery,” said Dlamini.
The PM also promised that they would rationalise government expenditure and improve efficiencies.
He stated that they would also restrict external/international travel-eliminate redundant posts.

“We will also review public assets to sell for improving cash flow position and optimise tax regime and fees to improve growth,” added Dlamini.
It should be mentioned that government had earlier promised to fully settle its E3 billion worth of debt to suppliers by the end of September.

Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg said given the fact that the E21.83 billion budget for the 2019/20 financial year would be fully funded, they anticipated that there would neither be debts to suppliers nor late payments because there would be sufficient funds to pay timeously.

“At the moment we will be looking for the funds to be raised through external financing. We hope the E3 billion debts would have been fully settled by the end of September,” Rijkenberg projected about a month ago.

Paid

The minister mentioned that a lot of companies had been paid what was due to them since the new government assumed their duties which show the level of commitment to ensure that all arrears are settled.
Government also recently announced that it would seek external financing to settle its arrears.

This undertaking was made by Rijkenberg during the 2019/20 post budget seminar. He said government was committed to ensuring that the private sector grows in order to significantly contribute to the country’s economy.

The minister reiterated that they had to ensure that the budget was fully funded to avoid a situation where they would be prompted to delay payments as a result of the lack of funds.
