MBABANE – The Construction Industry Council (CIC) has advised contractors to adhere to global standards as they ‘reform’ the largest association affiliated to them.

This was Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nhlanhla Dlamini’s brief reaction to latest amendments to the Eswatini Contractors’ Association (ECA) constitution, which was adopted by membership during a recent meeting convened at The George Hotel in Manzini.

Asked what his view on the decision to the effect that only shareholders of construction companies will now be eligible to be members of the ECA executive committee, Dlamini briefly said: ‘‘We have not yet been officially informed of the latest developments. Therefore, it would be premature to state our views on the matter.

“However, we would like to take this opportunity and advise all affiliates of the council to adhere to global standards as they make changes to their structures and constitutions.”

The issue of only shareholders sitting in the ECA executive committee is just one of the key amendments contained in the newly-adopted constitution for the contractors association, which comprises of slightly more than 1 200 affiliates.

Affiliate

Interim Chairman Reuben Msibi explained that the resolution to the effect that the executive committee should only comprise of company shareholders had been reached by membership taking into consideration that company owners are the ones who affiliate to the association.

He explained that it had been agreed by members that it would be a wise decision to have shareholders in the executive because they would make prudent decisions that would not harm the industry because it was where they derived their income.

“What happens in the case where either the manager who has been appointed by the company or employees leave the company in which they were representing in the executive?” rhetorically asked Msibi in justification of the reason they saw it fit to endorse the recommendation from the association’s membership.
