MBABANE – In preparation of being unbundled, Eswatini Posts and Telecommunications Services (EPTCS) has registered two subsidiaries.

The two subsidiaries registered by the entity are the Eswatini Telecom and the National Contact Centre BPO Services limited. Managing Director of the utility, Petros Dlamini, said the two subsidiaries that have been set by EPTC were in anticipation of the unbundling of the organisation.
In 2016, a law was passed that allowed EPTC to be unbundled into two factions. This was the Electronic Communications Act of 2013. This Act initiates the liberalisation of EPTC.
In doing so, the entity was presented with engaging in business and competing with other stakeholders. However, the utility has not yet unbundled itself as there are two draft Bills that need to be passed into law before the company could engage in the competitive market fully.

improvement

Dlamini said the registration of the two subsidiaries would result in the company improving its revenue. This, he said would be achieved through the improvement of inefficiencies that were endued by the two independent entities now.

The registration of the two entities allows us to have better productivity and also turn around the telecom department into a cash cow,” Dlamini said.
He said the duo were already in full service. Eswatini Telecom Limited is located on Sheffield Road while the National Contact Centre BPO Services Limited was situated at Songcondvongcondvo WemaSwati House at Phocweni.

“For the National Contact Centre, this was a strategic initiative to tap the unexplored business processing outsourcing space.”

vision

The ministry of ICT, in 2016 EPTC to establish a Contact Centre or Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) as part of the government’s vision for the Royal Science and Technology Park and Biotechnology Park.

Dlamini said that once the parastatal was unbundled, it would have two divisions; namely:  the wholesale division and the retail company.
He said the infrastructure development and rendering of infrastructural services shall be under the wholesale department while the retail department would entail all subsidiaries that were to engage in business.
He said the incorporation of the subsidiaries was in compliance with the Electronic Communications Act of 2013 and further keeping up with the shareholder vision.

unbundle

The MD said the Act sought to eventually unbundle EPTC into three legally independent entities. Currently, EswatiniTelecom provides the spectrum of global telecommunication services with direct dialing to over 200 countries and a 24-hour operator assisted service.
The entity further provides Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) broadband, a high speed, internet access service to send and receive data.
Another range of products and services is based on “wired and unwired” networks, including customer premises equipment (PABX) to provide users with flexible communication solutions. Other products include Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDN), Managed Data Services and Video Conferencing, plus call barring, three-party conferencing, and toll free services.

owned

Meanwhile, the National Contact Centre Business Process Outsourcing Services Limited, is a registered subsidiary company wholly owned by the Eswatini Post and Telecommunications Corporation (EPTC) and was duly incorporated in terms of the Eswatini Companies Act No.8 of 2009 under certificate of registration 743 of 2017.

The BPO sector has demonstrated the capability to absorb low-skill employment/school leavers/graduates, generate export revenue, trigger ICT development, improve efficiency of other sectors, precipitate the development of professionals and specialised labour and in the broadest sense, be a major contributor to the dynamic growth of the economy of the country as a whole.
