The Waterford I served for 21yrs'
The greatest educational pinnacle in southern Africa, that was installed by the late Sir Michael Stern (OBE) - the noble founder of Waterford School (named in 1982) as Waterford KaMhlaba (WK) United World College of Southern Africa (UWCSA), became the only United World College on African soil to date.
The falling of the curtain ending the apartheid system in South Africa – with the release of political prisoners from the Robben Island including former President Nelson Mandela - the reputed Anti-Apartheid School that I joined as an educator in January 1983, changed with time by 2003 to what she is fostering.
Stern as the first Head of Waterford School from its inception in 1963 for 10 years returned to England in 1973. The foundations and the teams of educators were very dedicated, most worked as missionaries during that period. Stern Esquire served as Superintendent for children’s homes until 1980. He then served as director of the charity Mind from 1980 to 1983.
I was fortunate to have met him in 1983 as we developed a close liaison and later whenever he visited with his children Hugh and Miranda especially after the demise of his wife, Sarah Roberts.
It was in 1986 that Stern married Sarah Roberts, who had a son, Hugh, from a previous marriage.
Their daughter, Miranda and Hugh were photogra-phed many a time at WK. Sarah died in 1987, and Stern focused on raising the children himself.
The greatest living memory of Sir Michael Stern was laid to rest on April 8, 1989 with funding from Swaziland Settlement Board under the headship of the late Dick Eyeington.
This will be the ever-lasting greatest Interna-tional Baccalaureate Experimental Sciences memorial, designed as the then Head of Experimental Sciences. The plaque ‘The Micheal Stern Science Wing’ will remind all of us of his achievements and bring back the memories of the greatest educationist, Sir Michael Stern.
Unfortunately, Stern died in an accident in Hindhead, Surrey on July 14, 2002, aged 80. It is his 10th death anniversary that I thought to celebrate using my gallery of photos to commemorate this great visionary, educator.
