MANZINI - Two members of the Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF) were arrested for robbing and assaulting a woman before drowning her in the Nkomazi River.

The soldiers, Sandile Mndzebele (24) and Sikh-umbuzo Ndzinisa (25), both of Mayiwane appeared before Magistrate Sebenzile Ndlela for a remand hearing on Tuesday.

Offences

They were charged with two offences; robbery and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Information availed in court is that on September 26, 2011, near the Nkomazi river, they allegedly assaulted one Bongiwe Maphosa by using force and violence to induce submission to steal.

They are alleged to have stolen her Samsung cellphone valued at E350, cash (E410) and her red jacket valued at E820.

Unlawfully

In the second count, they allegedly intentionally and unlawfully assaulted Ma-phosa with open hands and fists on the head several times and further drowned her in the river with the intent to cause her grievous bodily harm.

When the soldiers first appeared in court last month before Magistrate Ndlela, they requested bail which was denied as the offence they have committed is a serious one.

The case was postponed to October 20 pending the setting of a trial date.
