Hope House patients fed Oxy-silver

MBABANE – Africa Health Care Solutions has given the controversial mixture Oxy-silver to patients at Hope House in Manzini without approval of the institution’s administration.

Hope House accommodates terminally ill patients with the hope that they will recover.

Terminally ill patients could be those with cancer or AIDS related ailments.

Oxy-silver is said to be oxygenated water or a mixture of oxygen, silver and water.

This newspaper is in possession of exclusive pictures of a patient being given the mixture by Peter Luyima, director of the company Peter Luyima.

The picture was purportedly taken on April 8, 2011.

In the picture, the unidentified patient is seen taking the mixture under close supervision and surveillance of the product promoter.

Sister Elsa, Administrator of the centre, said Luyima’s actions were wrong.

She considered the marketer’s act as interference with the centre’s treatment processes.

"We did not give him permission to do that. We are not even aware that he visited our patients," she said.

She said it was wrong for Luyima to give patients his mixture because this act could create false hope leading to their rejection of prescribed medication after they have been told that the product has powers to treat and heal their ailments.

"We admit patients who are recovering from lots of illnesses, most of them are on antiretroviral treatment and some take medication for TB, imagine the disaster that could arise if they stop taking their regular medication for this product," she said.

She said foreign medication other than that prescribed for patients was banned at the institution.

She hopes Luyima will not return to the institution ‘to deceive patients.’

Meanwhile, Minister of Health Benedict Xaba said Luyima was illegally distributing the product in the country.

He said it was unethical to test any product or medication on Swazi patients without the approval of relevant structures.

"We have the Research and Ethical Committee which sits and looks at requests submitted, related to what Luyima is doing. If he wants to test the product he should follow the right channels," he said.

The minister was aware that there were many products being produced and sold to people illegally in the country.

The ministry is working on a legislation that will prevent this, with the aim of protecting the nation.

"People should follow proper channels of making studies in Swaziland. What these people are doing is undermining the Swazi people and this is not going to be allowed," he said.

Xaba said from the various meetings he has held with the marketers of Oxy-silver, he deduced that they may be from the African continent.

"If they are Africans, why didn’t they test the product in their own countries because the scourge of HIV/AIDS is affecting most African countries?" he wondered.

They were warned in Namibia

MBABANE – The Republic of Namibia last year gave marketers of Oxy-silver permission to sell the product – but only as a food supplement.

The Namibia Medicines Regulatory Council (NMRG) strictly warned the marketers against making any medicinal claims about their product.

A letter from NMRG dated April 19, 2010 approved the sale and use of the food supplement in that country.

This is contained in a letter provided by Peter Luyima who is Director of Africa Health Care Solutions.

This newspaper could not independently verify the authenticity of the letter.

The letter was addressed to John Kreitzer of Bio-Aquatic Limited and was written by Johannes Gaeseb.

It states that the request to promote and use Oxy-silver in that country was approved after the council visited the official website of the company.

The council also considered documents that were submitted by the company which indicated that the product was a food supplement. "The council decided to keep the product as such, that is being a food supplement, provided it does not make any medical claims," reads the letter in part.

The council told the oxy-silver promoters that since they will be distributing their product as a food supplement, they were not required to register the product with the NMRC.

"I would further like to inform you that you will be required to submit a medicines registration application if you make any medical claims on your product," reads the letter.

This is medical fraud – Xaba

MBABANE – Health Minister Benedict Xaba says promoters of the Oxy-silver mixture could be committing medical fraud.

Xaba said this was a serious offence.

His ministry was going to make a thorough investigation of the product together with the claims they make.

"On Monday I watched a programme on television speaking about medical fraud committed by promoters of a similar product. The people were arrested by investigators in the USA and charged with medical fraud.

"I also suspect this to be medical fraud and we will investigate it, I want to encourage people on treatment to continue relying on ARVs and other approved prescribed drugs," he said

"To me, the promoters of Oxy-silver appear to be troublesome people. They create problems everywhere they go," he said.

Xaba said he told Luyima and his partners not to sell the product in the country until they followed the right channels.

"I gave him the procedure, that he must register a company with the Ministry of Commerce then bring the product to us so that we could give it to experts who will analyse it.

In response, Peter Luyima, Director of Africa Health Care Solutions, said his company was currently formalising the registration process to legally operate in the country.

He said this process was being handled by the company’s attorneys.

As far as he is concerned, there is nothing wrong with what his company is doing especially because they were given permission by Minister Xaba.

He said such permission was granted to them by the minister verbally.

The minister has denied this.

Luyima said his company in Swaziland was going to be a regional office where the product would be produced for export to other African countries.

"As official Oxy-Silver Africa franchise holders in collaboration with Bio Aquatic Ltd Nevada Company in America (American Investors), from February 2011 we made several presentations to several bodies in Swaziland to demonstrate a potential of locating a manufacturing facility that will produce Oxygenated Silver H2O a World- class nutritional breakthrough in Swaziland for the Africa export market," he said.

He said this product has a proven track record in fighting ailments and further the country stands to benefit in the Foreign Direct Investment worth millions of Emalangeni that comes with the product.

"This product will help to control growing threat of diseases taking toll on unsuspecting populations. Swaziland will benefit tremendously from this investment of a production facility that will produce a new promising product made from energized water and silver," he said.

"According to the product’s developers, including famous health scientists, the entirely new class of liquids and gels is performing `miraculously’ in successfully dealing with HIV, the AIDS virus, tuberculosis, and malaria and many other diseases taking toll in Africa today in particular Swaziland," he said.
