Man burns lover's family house then hangs himself

MANZINI – A jealous fit of rage ended tragically when a man torched his girlfriend’s family house before hanging himself.
Vulindlela Vilakati (24) is said to have suspected that his girlfriend Thandekile Simelane (22), with whom he had a two-year-old child had a love affair.
The incident occurred at Sidzakeni, outside Manzini.
Simelane said they started quarrelling over petty issues a few months ago because he was convinced she was cheating on him. "He started demanding that I go to his home at Mahlabane everyday which was cumbersome for me. I tried to explain how this was difficult but he started accusing me of infidelity.
"He also alleged that he had been called by a certain man on his phone, who said he was the father of our two-year-old child.
"I tried to reason with him that this was not true but he became more confused," Simelane alleged.
Simelane’s mother Sibongile Shiba said she was with her family in their two-roomed house when Vilakati came to register his dissatisfaction with the relationship.
"He took a gas stove opened the gas outlets and lit a match, then threw it in the house.
"We were lucky to escape because when we saw that he had turned vicious, we ran away and left him to do the damage," she said.
When the Times team visited the family house, almost everything in the house was found burnt, including mattresses, cupboards, curtains and dishes.
Shiba said after causing the damage Vilakati left for his parental home at Mahlabane, near St Juliana.
She said police arrived late at the scene and Vilakati had already vanished.
Shiba said they got a report that Vilakati had taken his life on Friday near his parental home.
Shiba and her daughter have since asked for accommodation from neighbours.
Police Public Relations Officer Superintendent Wendy Hleta confirmed the incident and said police would investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
