MBABANE - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has awarded the copyright society with E1.5 million funding.  

As announced by the Minister for Commerce, Industry and Trade, Manqoba Khumalo, this support comes under the initiative titled ‘Reinforcing Copyrights for Eswatini’s Cultural and Creative Industries.’ “I extended my heartfelt thanks to all our partners especially UNESCO for their unwavering support,” he said. He also recognised the copyright society, the copyright office and the vibrant community of creators and rights holders who continue to shape the national identity. 

He emphasised that copyright is more than legal protection, it’s the heartbeat of innovation, culture and economic growth. From musicians and filmmakers to artisans and digital pioneers, intellectual property fuels livelihoods and empowers businesses of every size. The minister highlighted the important role of the copyright society of Eswatini in ensuring creators are fairly rewarded for their work. ‘‘With government oversight we’re committed to transparency accountability and building a strong foundation for a self-sustaining future.’’ The minister also encouraged emaSwati to educate themselves about their rights, understand how they should be compensated and to register their work to benefit from these structures. 

According to the Eswatini Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Society (ESWACOS), the ‘Reinforcing Copyrights for Eswatini’s Cultural and Creative Industries’ project is funded by the International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD) of UNESCO established under the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. The project officially commenced in August 2025 and will run through September 2026. 

The IFCD is a dedicated funding mechanism by UNESCO that supports developing countries in strengthening their cultural and creative sectors promoting cultural diversity and fostering sustainable development. The 2005 Convention is a key international treaty, to which Eswatini is signatory, aimed at safeguarding the richness and pluralism of cultural expressions worldwide.
