For Nelsiwe Simelane, a creative multimedia specialist in the Kingdom of Eswatini, the world has always been a canvas.
From a young age, she found herself fascinated by the diverse ways artists express themselves.
Her fondest childhood memories involve drawing and immersing herself in nature, while her afternoons were often spent with family, absorbed in the cinematic storytelling of movies, sitcoms and music. This early exposure inspired a lifelong passion for blending reality with creativity and a touch of fantasy.
Building on the foundation of Eswatini’s creative landscape, Simelane transitioned from static design to the world of motion.
When approaching a new project, such as a logo, she focuses on bringing symbolism to life. She often asks: “How can movement deepen the meaning? How can animation elevate the story already present in the design?”
To achieve this, she incorporates smooth transitions, meticulous motion timing and cinematic lighting to maintain a sense of regality.
She also employs modern motion graphic techniques to ensure the final piece feels fresh and contemporary. Her primary goal is to honour the original design while enhancing its impact through animation.
Her professional milestones are numerous. Simelane has spent five years refining broadcast design and motion graphics at Eswatini TV. For more than three years, she has been entrusted with animating historic national projects through free-flow animation.
Furthermore, she serves as a lead graphic designer and controller during His Majesty’s annual national live broadcasts and other significant events. “Every project reinforces my conviction that true excellence comes from passion and dedication. I am continually growing, learning new techniques and exploring creative boundaries to elevate both my work and the platforms I contribute to,” she says.
One of Simelane’s greatest strengths is her ability to think visually and translate abstract ideas into designs that connect with audiences emotionally.
While she is highly detail-oriented, she admits that her challenge lies in balancing creative expression with the need to preserve a project’s core identity. She views her experience as a collaborative journey, constantly learning to balance ambition with precision. Her creative process is deeply rooted in her heritage.
She draws inspiration from traditional Swati art and patterns, reimagining them through modern technology. This includes elegant altering transitions and refined pacing to maintain a sophisticated tone.
A typical day for Simelane starts early with planning and reflection. Her mornings are dedicated to Eswatini TV’s in-house designs, but her contributions span multiple areas, including video editing, vision mixing and documentary storytelling, such as the NDMA’s 10th Year Anniversary Documentary.
After a short recharge, her afternoons are filled with research and networking, while evenings are reserved for family and hobbies.
Breaking into a small market as a young creative presented its challenges, but she overcame these by consistently delivering high-quality work and building a robust portfolio.
