MBABANE – The Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) spearheaded the national observance of Earth Hour 2026 on Saturday, centring activities at the House on Fire venue in Malkerns.

This year’s observance was held under the theme ‘Building the Foundations for Climate Resilient Development, Adaptation, Mitigation and Energy Security for Eswatini’s NDC 3.0’.

The event served as the focal point for a nationwide campaign aimed at climate change awareness and energy conservation.

The 2026 initiative was supported by a multi-channel strategy designed to broaden public participation. This included educational outreach and collaborations with local communities, such as Siteki for the Green Walk, uniting residents in action for a cleaner, greener future.

Local entities participated by dimming non-essential lighting at commercial properties.

At 8:30pm, non-essential lights were switched off across the country for one hour.

The official gathering at House on Fire included addresses from EEC leadership and environmental advocates.

There were exhibitions detailing current renewable energy projects within Eswatini and performances from local acts including Gospel artist Nothando Dlamini, Gogo Eswatini and S’lwane, Sgitha, Majaha Nkonyane and DJ Wicked amongst many. The event was child-friendly as youngsters engaged in different games and enjoyed the music.

The managing director, delivering his speech during the event, mentioned that Earth Hour teaches that even the smallest actions matter.

“Earth Hour reminds us that change begins with each of us. Together, we can ensure that Eswatini’s progress in harmony with nature is aligned with the world’s net-zero vision, while building resilient infrastructure and sustainable development,” he said.
