Local artist Young Zesh is celebrating a major career milestone this week. His Afro pop collaboration ‘Kogcina Bani’, featuring Durban-based musician Nomndayi, has officially secured a spot on the playlist of Ukhozi FM, one of South Africa’s leading radio stations.

The achievement marks a significant breakthrough for the duo. Their cross-border collaboration is gaining steady traction among regional audiences and industry experts suggest this is a turning point. Rotation on Ukhozi FM is widely regarded as a stamp of approval that often signals mainstream momentum for emerging acts.

Nomndayi, a songwriter, performer and producer from Inanda in Durban, has built a solid reputation within Afro pop circles. He is known for previous releases such as ‘iSide Lami’, ‘Ngiyabonga’ and ‘Amathafa’. Over the years, he has cultivated a loyal fan base through consistent live performances and strong social media engagement. He is also active in his community, hosting initiatives such as the Nomndayi Community Festive Games.

His steady rise has placed him in broader conversations regarding the South African Music Awards. Critics have noted his impact as an independent artist operating successfully outside the major-label system.

Released on November1, 2024, under Nomndayi Music, ‘Kogcina Bani’ has found a second wind following its inclusion on the Ukhozi FM playlist. The station broadcasts to millions of listeners across South Africa and the wider region. Historically, it has played a pivotal role in breaking new talent and amplifying locally produced music.

Speaking on the milestone, Young Zesh described the airplay as both humbling and affirming. “It feels amazing and humbling at the same time. When you record a song, you do not always imagine it crossing borders,” he said.

The artist noted that the reception of the track outside its initial market confirms the broad appeal of their sound. “It shows that the sound and the message are universal and that people from different places can connect with the energy,” he added.

As ‘Kogcina Bani’ continues to climb the charts, both artists are looking toward a busy year of performances and potential new releases. For Young Zesh, this moment is a testament to the power of collaboration and the growing reach of the Afro pop genre across Southern Africa.
