Arrival of the Khoisan a cultural gift to Eswatini

Sir,

I wish to share my reflections on a significant cultural moment that recently took place the arrival of the Khoisan cultural group in Eswatini. This visit represents far more than a ceremonial occasion; it is a celebration of African heritage, unity and the deep-rooted connection among the continent’s indigenous peoples.

The Khoisan are among the oldest surviving cultural groups in Africa, and their customs, language and traditions are rich with wisdom, history, and identity.

Their presence in Eswatini offers a unique opportunity to engage with a living culture that has preserved its values through generations.

At a time when modern influences often threaten the survival of traditional knowledge, the Khoisan stand as a powerful example of cultural resilience.

Their visit is a reminder that African identity is not defined by a single language or nation, but by a shared respect for ancestry, land and community.

As emaSwati, we hold dear our own traditions from our ceremonies and dances to our sense of unity and respect for elders.

Seeing another African community express similar values in different ways opens our hearts to understanding the depth and diversity of the African continent.

Importantly, this visit is also a learning experience for our youth. Many of our children and young people rarely have the chance to witness indigenous cultures beyond their own.

This exchange allows them to broaden their worldview, appreciate cultural diversity and understand that the preservation of tradition is something to be proud of.

It instils in them a sense of identity and belonging that no textbook can teach.

Cultural exchange also fosters mutual respect. When we welcome another group with open arms, we promote peace, understanding and a sense of togetherness that strengthens the social fabric of our country.

Such moments remind us that Eswatini is not just a nation with a proud past, but a country that values learning from others and building meaningful connections.

Additionally, events like this have the potential to enhance national pride and promote unity among our people. They encourage us to reflect on our own customs and traditions and to preserve them with even greater dedication. The presence of the Khoisan encourages dialogue not only between cultures but also between generations.

I commend all those who made this visit possible and created a platform for such meaningful interaction. Let us continue to support and engage in cultural exchange as a tool for education, empowerment and national growth. The arrival of the Khoisan is a gift to Eswatini a reminder of who we are as Africans and of the strength we draw from our shared heritage.

Seeing another African community express similar values in different ways opens our hearts to understanding the depth and diversity of the African continent.
