IT is Truman Madsen who said vision is a composite outlook, while Jonathan Swift defined it as the art of seeing things invisible. This is seeing things in the mind first before they are actualised. It is the spiritual creation of things in the intellect before the physical creation. And a visionary is not a dreamer. “The difference between a dreamer and a visionary is that a dreamer has his eyes closed and a visionary has his eyes open,” said Martin Luther King Jr.

A visionary is a leader. Filled with vision, leaders turn to take us through the wilderness; through places that others say are forbidden to tread on; doing things that others have said cannot be done; breaking into new frontiers. Like Napoleon, the great French General of the 18th Century, visionaries say: “I see only my objective - the obstacles must give way.”

When they set on a given task, visionaries do not worry about the many ways it cannot be done, which is a spirit of failures or those who plan to fail, but they, enthused by the passion of vision, look only for the many ways in which a thing can be done. They take Steve Jobs’ advice on despising the noise outside themselves. For Jobs said: “Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice; and most important, have the courage to follow your own heart and intuition - they somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

Visionaries often ask themselves this question: “Can I do this?” And they answer quickly, YES! This is the answer they give because they know, like Ralph Waldo Emerson, the 19th Century USA philosopher, that “Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.” And in so doing, they ‘let’ the power greater than them do their bidding. Mind you, I say they ‘LET’ because this power of universal intelligence (or God) wants to help each one of us as long as we make the decision to act in a certain way.  It is not offside to say once you make up your mind to act in a certain way, the universe is ready to aid you and I. The well philosophized visionary knows and understands this, and therefore ‘LET GO (of fear, doubts and mediocrity) AND LET GOD.

Ronaldinho, one of soccer’s thrice great, in my opinion, said when he plays soccer there’s a voice that whispers things to him, hence the miracles he would do in the field of play. This voice is surely always ready to help each one of us if we decide to heed its call and advice. All great achievers are aided by this voice to greatness. No one achieves anything by himself or herself without this great Universal Intelligence (or Power) which existed long before we came to this earth.
This voice is beneficial, and in the words of Dag Hammarskjold, former UN Secretary General; “Only he who keeps his eye fixed on the horizon will find his right road.”
Though on the right road, the visionaries know something about failure and that the going does get tough sometimes and failing many times doesn’t deter them from keeping on going. And like Albert Einstein, they would say to themselves: “I think and think for months and years, 99 times the conclusion is false, the 100th time I am right.”
