LOBAMBA – Premier League stars feel athletes with mental disability should be given a platform to showcase their skills in most national events.

Special Olympics Swaziland staged the National Athletics Championships at Somhlolo National Stadium, where some ambassadors who are soccer stars were in attendance yesterday. Players present included Mbabane Swallows midfielder, Wonder ‘Samba Jive’ Nhleko, Manzini Sundowns dazzling winger, Darren ‘Dazza’ Christie and agile former Sihlangu and Green Mamba shot-stopper, Njabuliso Simelane.

The players unanimously agreed that disability was no barrier to participating in sports.
“It’s exciting to watch the children enjoying themselves on the track. It can be good if the athletes can curtain-raise in major events like the SwaziBank and Charity Cup finals,” said Simelane.

Christie  also expressed his delight to be part of the festivities, saying he was happy to motivate the youngsters.
“I’ve embraced such an initiative a long time ago. I was even an ambassador while still studying in the US. The children get inspiration and tips on how to take care of themselves. Parents should ensure their children are not left out,” said Christie.

Other players who are ambassadors of Special Olympics Swaziland are  Sundowns’  left-footed midfielder, Mlamuli ‘Mlaba’ Nkambule and recently retired former Swazi international Sibusiso’ Spoko’ Dlamini.
At least four outstanding athletes in the competition would represent the country in the World Championships in the United States of America next year.
