MHLUME – A lone strike by speedy striker Civil Matsebula was all Correctional Services ensemble Green Mamba needed to secure maximum points against a much improved Malanti Chiefs yesterday.

The dull and boring MTN Premier League encounter, played in front of more or less 600 soccer lovers, was played under blazing hot conditions at Mhlume Stadium.
The hot conditions, as temperatures in the sugar belt sailed up to an unbearable 38 degrees Celsius, contributed to the pedestrian-like performance of the two teams.
Referee Lucky ‘Makalakalane’ Ndlangamandla was forced to give the teams a two-minute water break as the weather became unbearable.

Malanti, who entered the game fresh from two crushing defeats, showed so much improvement in their play but were still not sharp enough to trouble the Green mamba goalkeeper, Mpendulo Dlamini, on the hot afternoon.
It was the Thabo ‘Koki’ Vilakati led ensemble that still created the better chances though, through left winger Matsebula who gave the Malanti Chiefs defence a torrid time each time he was in possession of the ball.

Green Mamba, however, still had to wait until the second half to break the deadlock. Matsebula, who was increasingly becoming dangerous with each passing minute, rattled the net from close range.
He simply toe-poked the ball home after the Chiefs’ defence failed to clear their lines.

It proved to be the decisive strike. After the goal, Malanti tried to push more men forward but found Siyabonga ‘Msholozi’ Mdluli, Banele Dlamini and Sabelo ‘Shushu’ Shilubane in an uncompromising mood. They defended resolutely to annex the maximum points at stake.
