MBABANE – Mbabane Swallows have struck a fortune in the sale of Ghanaian forward Mike Mohammed to South Africa’s Maritzburg United.

The capital city giants prized the player at an E800 000 clearance fee, which was agreed by the KwaZulu Natal-based ensemble.

However, the teams, according to an official at Maritzburg United, agreed on a E650 000 upfront payment for the player and the rest of the money will be paid when the player makes at least 10 appearances out of 15 games. He has already appeared in his first match against Chippa United on Tuesday where he scored in their 3-0 win.

“The player was finally cleared last Friday after Maritzburg had paid the E650 000 to Swallows as part of the deal. The remaining E150 000 will be paid when the player makes at least 10 appearances in 15 games,” the official, who preferred anonymity, said.

The signing on fee and clearance have raised Mohammed’s value to about E1.8 million. This means Swallows have netted about E1.4m in the past two weeks after also winning the Swazi Telecom Charity Cup whose grand prize was E750 000. Maritzburg United Manager Quintin Jettoo could only confirm that the club paid Mohammed’s clearance fee to Mbabane Swallows last week before he was registered with the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

“We do not discuss figures with the media because we treat such matters as private between the two teams. But we have no problem if Swallows choose to reveal it to you because they were the ones who received the money. However, we are happy with the deal and we hope the player will adapt well in the new environment and deliver the goods,” he said.

Mbabane Swallows acting CEO Sibusiso Manana also refused to discuss the matter when quizzed yesterday.
The player’s agent, Abel ‘Chacklas’ Shongwe, confirmed that there were conditions attached to the player’s clearance fee, but said the two teams were the ones who could disclose those details. But he did mention that the whole deal benefitted all parties involved.

Mohammed has made history by becoming the most expensive export from the MTN Premier League at E800 000. The highest figure paid was E200 000 for Mfanafuthi ‘Taribo’ Bhembe when he joined Jomo Cosmos in August 2009.
