MBABANE – Long distance runner Winile Mnisi stands a chance to win big in cash prizes during the Mandela Marathon tomorrow.

The 42.2km event will be staged in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, starting at 7am. The shining Royal Swaziland Police (RSP) athlete will pocket E50 000 if she wins the championship set to feature seasoned runners from across the African continent. Mnisi said he was looking forward to the race but acknowledged that victory would not come on a silver platter.

“I finished fourth last year but would love to do better this time around. However, I had more time to prepare last year,” she said.
According to the prize breakdown, runners finishing from fifth to second positions will walk away with cash ranging between E12 000 and E30 000.

If Mnisi can break a record when winning the race, she will get a further E40 000. The best time so far in the women category is 3:06:20 hours.
The event starts at the Manaye Hall in Imbali and finish at The Nelson Mandela Capture Site.

Meanwhile, Mnisi will now miss out on competing in another lucrative competition, the Gauteng Marathon next Sunday. The champion will become E250 000 richer.

The former Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF) runner dominates in races in the country and beyond its borders. She won E15 000 in a marathon in Mozambique over two months ago.
