EZULWINI – Visiting Zimbabwe’s Tongoona Charamba, is the winner of the annual Siphiwe Nyanda Golf Tournament.

Charamba, who is fondly known as ‘TC’, carded a score of 70 in the third and final round to come out on tops on eight-under-par 208, pocketing a whopping E27 000 at the Royal Swazi Spa Golf Course at Ezulwini yesterday.

The celebrated event played in honour of South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC) stalwart, Siphiwe Nyanda, featured professional golfers from Southern African countries that include Zimbabwe, South Africa and Zambia.
“It’s my first time to compete in the event but I think the experience of playing in the same course in previous Sunshine Tour tournaments has come in handy,”  the champion said.
“I did not play well in the first and last round but managed to win. I still feel I should have done better.”

Meanwhile, 10th placed Arthur Horne was the best finisher among the local golfers with a score of 218. He qualified to pocket E5 000. Other local golfers that took part include Raymond Mathonsi, Meshack Zwane, Peter Dlamini, Moses Shongwe, Thulani Mkhaliphi, Robert Shiba and Peter Gama but all missed out on getting a share of the E120 000 that was up for grabs.

Tournament organiser Mike Thusi dubbed the event a success, saying focus would shift to the amateurs who will take to the greens this morning ahead of the prize giving at the Royal Swazi Convention Centre at 7pm.
“It was an interesting tournament and we had 75 golfers in the pre-qualifiers on Tuesday. We’re happy to have watched top golfers from Southern Africa,” he said.
