MBABANE – Manzini Sundowns’ relationship with South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns could be revived, following a fruitful meeting between the two parties held on Tuesday in Pretoria.
Our source within the Pretoria-based side disclosed that the meeting was held at Chloorkop offices.

Former Premier League of Swaziland (PLS) Executive Committee member and businessman, Celani Shongwe, the Times Sports Desk has established, orchestrated the deal which could benefit ‘Basop IKappa Kappa’ and Swazi football, as a whole in a big way.

Our source at SA Sundowns revealed that among other benefits there could be the possibility of the South African side sending some players to their local namesake on loan arrangements.
“Sundowns have signed some foreign players who may not be in Pitso Mosimane’s plans and they could be sent to Swaziland, with Manzini Sundowns only catering for their accommodation and we will continue paying their salaries and other related benefits,” said our informed source.

The source disclosed that the South African-based team was represented by Manager Mike ‘Nanana’ Ntombela and coach Pitso Mosimane, with PLS Board of Governor and Manzini Sundowns boss Mark Carmichael representing the Swazi side.
The Pretoria giants’ PRO Kabelo Mosito confirmed the meeting but declined to reveal any details when quizzed yesterday.
Carmichael also declined to comment much on the meeting, except to say that he did attend a meeting in Pretoria.

“There is absolutely nothing I can say about the issue you are talking about,” he said.
The two teams’ relationship started in the early 1990s when South Africa was readmitted into the world of football, following the lifting of the sanctions imposed as a result of the now fallen apartheid regime.
Manzini Sundowns, who were at the time called Denver Sundowns, became the first local side to face Mamelodi Sundowns in their first match against a team outside South Africa. The match, which was played on July 18, 1992 at Somhlolo National Stadium, drew a capacity crowd and it ended 2-all.

The Patrice Motsepe-owned side held its preseason camp in the 2011/12 season in the country while they were still coached by former Dutch international player Johan Neeskens.  During the time, the team played Manzini Wanderers, Mbabane Swallows and Manzini Sundowns at the Mavuso Sports Centre, beating the former two giants 4-0 respectively. They then won 0-1 against Manzini Sundowns who were coached by Rodwell Dhlakama.
