MANZINI- Young Buffaloes striker Phiwayinkhosi Dlamini, who is also an Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF) member was arrested for fighting and injuring police officers and damaging an alcometer device in the process.

Dlamini (23) of Phocweni Army Barracks appeared before Magistrate Lucia Lukhele yesterday facing five traffic offences.

On Tuesday evening, during the public holiday, while driving a Nissan Sunny, the USDF member along the D13 public road, near Hlobile, in Matsapha, while under the influence of liquor and unlicensed, drove recklessly and failed to control his vehicle and knocked a pavement upon seeing the police who had been conducting a roadside check.

The player is said to have been driving his vehicle in a zig-zag manner and after knocking the said pavement, the police approached him after suspecting that he was drunk and ordered him to take a breath test. Dlamini refused to provide his breath specimen when ordered to do so by Constable Mavuso of Sigodvweni Police Station. When the officers ordered him to board the police vehicle, he refused to do so and also resisted arrest effected by the traffic police officers.

The charge sheet stated that the striker fought and wrestled with the officers who were effecting the arrest. One of the officers, Constable Mavuso is said to have been baldy injured on his fore finger when the incident occurred. The alcometer device also got damaged in the process and eventually the USDF member was arrested and detained at the police station.

During his appearance in court yesterday, Dlamini was accompanied by family members and USDF senior officials. He pleaded guilty to all the offences and informed the court that he was remorseful after realising that he had committed the said offences.
“Your Worship, I am a first offender and I promise not to commit a similar offence,” he said. At the time of compiling this report, the USDF member had already paid the stipulated fine amounts. When leaving the magistrates court, he was aboard a white army vehicle together with the USDF officials.
