ARE YOU ON TRACK WITH YOUR TARGETS?

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Half a year is now gone. In fact it’s only five months before the end of 2014. We started the year together. We made a number of good promises, resolutions, goals and targets. We drafted and adopted good plans and schedules. Like all normal people and organisations, we always plan to improve ourselves. Did we put our plans to action?

WHAT HAVE YOU ACHIEVED SO FAR?

Theoretically we could say its five months to the end of the year, but practically it’s only four months since December is always a busy and distractive month. What have you really achieved so far?  How do you measure or assess your achievements? Do you focus on quantity or quality? What’s quality to you?

HOW DID YOU SPEND YOUR BUDGET?

As a person or organisation, did you spend wisely this year? Accountability alone is not enough, but spending wisely is very important.  You might be able to account for all the funds and resources, but all to find you weren’t spending on things that gave you or your organisation a good mileage. Some organisations spend a lot on refreshments, trips and allowances and spend very little on developing athletes, training equipment, capacity building or developing the actual organisations.  Budgeting and spending normally go hand in hand. Sometimes it’s very difficult to spend wisely if you never budgeted wisely from the onset.

HOW DID YOU PERFORM AS AN EXECUTIVE?

How do you measure your success as an executive? How does the membership measure your success? With Five months to go before the end of 2014, did you deliver as expected? How many tournaments did you successfully organise? How many new branches did you open or revive? Has the membership and following increased? Did you improve the technical and tactical performance of your team and athletes? How much sponsorship did you secure this season? What new and beneficial things did you introduce? How many successful meetings did you hold?

ACHIEVEMENTS
NORMALLY OVERLOOKED

Some achievements are not easy to measure or recognise, yet very important. Team building is one important achievement that we always overlook when listing achievements. It takes a lot to create a strong team within any organisation. Creating a strong team goes beyond financial resources. Discipline, commitment and dedication are other important achievements that are usually overlooked, yet very important in the existence of any organisation. You might not have accumulated the target number of medals, but being committed to your training schedule accounts for a lot.
That is why it’s very important to keep a register. Being able to motivate your athletes to attend training, meetings and other key functions is a milestone.
You might have not budgeted for this at the beginning of the year, but if you were able to achieve it, then you did a good job.

WAY FORWARD

We can’t turn back the hands of time. As said before, practically we have four months before the end of the year. It’s time to revise your 2014 resolutions and focus on what is achievable within the next four months.
One beneficial way of revising your resolutions is by getting help from any experienced person of your choice.  Most executive committees prefer revising resolutions without the involvement of the entire membership. It is very important to involve all athletes during such processes.
Involving membership is normally a problem, if the executive committee has been operating without the involvement or mandate of the membership for the past seven months.  The meetings tend to be misinterpreted by some members in such situations. To avoid such conditions, always keep the membership periodically informed and involved.

GOOD LUCK TEAM
SWAZILAND!

The Commonwealth Games are about to begin, we wish Team Swaziland the best of luck. Swaziland’s first medal came during the 1974 Commonwealth games in Christchurch, New Zealand, when our local distance runner, Richard Mabuza, won a bronze medal. Thirty years later, Simanga ‘The Boar’ Shiba, won another bronze medal during the Commonwealth Games in 2006, Melbourne, Australia. Eight years later; we need another medal Team Swaziland.
I can’t say we are a ‘Bronze Nation’, but what I know is that we need another medal. Many medals could be glory, but a single medal shall be regarded as a blessing to the entire nation. I wish you the best. Go prove to the rest that indeed you are the best!
Fair Play! It’s A Game After All
