GOVT, SPORTS COUNCIL TALKS FAR FROM OVER

MBABANE – Associations will have to wait longer before knowing government’s position on funding their mother body, SNSC.

Government is threatening to withdraw from the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2010, which forces it to fund the Swaziland National Sports Council (SNSC), if the latter fails to accept the much publicised Sports Policy.  The policy defines how sports in the country should be governed and further brings drastic changes in local sports which are challenged by the associations.

In an extra-ordinary meeting held at OlympAfrica Sports Centre at Lobamba on Sunday, the associations asked the SNSC Board to negotiate with government, particularly the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs for consultation on the policy before its implementation.

The Board, it was gathered, had a brief meeting with a delegation led by acting Principal Secretary in the ministry , Maswazi Shongwe yesterday, and it was  resolved that  the recommendations of the associations be  submitted in writing within two days.

SNSC Chairman Menzi Dlamini could only confirm the meeting but said the discussions were not for public consumption.
“We communicated the associations’ resolutions to the ministry as per the instruction of the General Assembly,” was all he could say.
One of the major changes ushered by the policy sees the SNSC changing to Swaziland National Sports and Recreation Council (SNSRC).
