SIHLANGU GET BYE TO 2ND ROUND OF AFCON 2015
MBABANE – The National team, Sihlangu will play in the second round of the Orange AFCON 2015 Qualifiers.
This comes after the team was not part of the four that played in the first round being Mauritius, Mauritania, Eritrea and South Sudan. Sihlangu is amongst the 28 countries that will play in the preliminary round.
The qualifiers draw for the AFCON to be held in Morocco 2015 from January 16 to 7 February 5 will be held in Cairo, Egypt on April 27.
The qualifiers shall be played in the format of several preliminary rounds. Out of the 51 countries engaged in these qualifiers, the top 21 teams listed in the CAF Ranking shall automatically qualify for the group phase.
The seven others to partake in the group phase shall be determined following the conclusion of the preliminary rounds, held from May to August 2014.
Sihlangu is expected to play against their first opponents on the weekend of May 16 to 18 the first leg and the second leg is slated for the weekend of May 30 to June 1 in the first round of the preliminaries.
The 26 countries to play in the preliminaries are: Swaziland, Libya, Equatorial Guinea, Botswana, Malawi, Uganda, Mozambique, Benin, Sierra Leone, Congo, Central African Republic, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Liberia, Gambia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Namibia, Burundi, Lesotho, Guinea Bissau, Madagascar, Chad, São Tomé and Príncipe, Seychelles and Comoros.
The 14 winners will then play in the third round of the preliminaries with the seven winner’s joining the top 21 teams in group stages.
The two top teams of each group will then directly qualify for the Orange AFCON 2015, along with the third place winners of the seven groups. There will be 16 teams (including hosts Morocco) at AFCON 2015.
The National Football Association of Swaziland (NFAS) CEO Frederick Mngomezulu confirmed the changes in the qualifiers yesterday. He said they were now going to change the programme to accommodate the new changes.
The Harries ‘Madze’ Bulunga side is expected to start full time camp on May 4. Mngomezulu said they were still to engage stakeholders like the Premier League of Swaziland (PLS). He said they would like to have the player’s at least two weeks before playing a game.
