BOXER VERSUS KARATEKA – WHO WINS?

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Two deadly bulls set against each other. Which fighter is better between the two? This is one question readers normally ask. If you could match a boxer and a karateka, who could win? From face value, it’s easy to guess, yet practically, the going gets tough.  Before one predicts the winner, a number of factors must be considered.

THE STYLES OF THE FIGHTERS

Karate or martial arts as most people prefer to call it, comes in different styles. When matching these two athletes, the styles in terms of boxing and karate are very crucial. Some types of martial arts are more aggressive than others. Boxing as a sport can be differentiated by the way boxers position themselves in the ring or fighting techniques. A karateka who practises a less aggressive style matched with a boxer who fights like a deadly bull, can drop dead within no time. The reserve in terms of the martial arts style and boxing style is also true.

WHO LANDS THE
FIRST BLOW?

We talk of power, technique and target. The one who lands the first blow has a bigger advantage. One good blow from a matured professional boxer could send an opponent unconscious. One good kick from a matured professional karateka could render an opponent, helpless.

FIGHTING DISTANCE

Most fighters prefer certain fighting distances based on personal or professional reasons. At close range most karatekas would cry for help when matched with good boxers. Some boxers are capable of throwing a number of deadly punches within no time. Under normal circumstances, the karateka would not have time to kick, if the opponent is at close range; especially karatekas who prefer kicking than punching.  In case it’s a distant fight, then the karateka takes control.

PERSEVERANCE
AND ENDURANCE

When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. Boxers normally fight more rounds than karatekas. They are used to receiving and handling hard punches and pain. Whilst most boxers are trained to last the full distance (12 rounds maximum), karatekas are normally taught to drop it while it’s hot. They are taught to dismantle their opponents from the first blow. If the fight goes the full distance, the boxer stands a better chance. As the fight takes longer delivering a deadly kick becomes a tough job for the karateka.

DETERMINATION
AND DISCIPLINE

The attitude, creativity determination and discipline of the fighter also counts. While most people believe in power, some prefer minimum power but at the right target.
The fighter who will know where it hurts the most could win without maximum force.

FINALLY

It is very difficult to predict the winner. There’s nothing like a wild guess or thumb-suck.
Fortunately one is speaking from experience. I’ve been there and enjoyed it. In short, never under estimate the power of each style.
The fact that one is doing judo doesn’t mean he is less lethal than either a boxer or karateka. A judoka (judo player) could send you flying and paralysed with one throw, same as a boxer or karateka.

UPDATE OR
UPCOMING FIGHTS

No style has confirmed, only rumours.
Taekwondo, Boxing, Judo and Ashihari promised some profiles of their outstanding players. We are also interested in the profiles of the veterans and legends: the likes of Fanana ‘Tyson’ Dlamini, Kidzo and Bra Chicks (boxing), Zakhele (Taekwondo coach) and Senei Mfanafuthi and Sensei Thomo (Oyam), just to mention but a few.
Let us also honour by showcasing some of our late local heroes who highly contributed to the existence and success of our different styles. I am waiting!
