'Birds' players finally paid
MBABANE – After downing tools last week and threatening to boycott the Young Buffaloes game, Mbabane Swallows players have received their salaries.
According to sources close to the team, the players have been compensated for their outstanding dues.
The insider refuted claims that the team’s recent poor performance was attributed to unpaid salaries. “The players were remunerated ahead of the Buffaloes game, and it is erroneous to suggest they lost because they were boycotting. They received their payments,” the source asserted.
Reports of unpaid salaries surfaced last week in our publication, highlighting that the players had refrained from attending training throughout the week due to salary-related issues.

Coach Sindiso Gama acknowledged that the players delivered commendable performances despite the lack of training caused by external factors.
“I believe they performed admirably, considering they had not trained for the entire week. We conceded some soft goals that we should have avoided; otherwise, we could have secured a victory,” he remarked. Gama noted that the team’s performance could have been significantly better, were it not for internal strife that sometimes hinders their capabilities.
He commended the players for their resilience in challenging matches, stating: “We could be contending for the league title, but we faltered in our campaign following our defeat to Moneni Pirates. That is when all chaos ensued, leading to our inconsistency.”
Notably, Swallows fans Mzwandile Khumalo and Chuchuza Nhleko expressed their dissatisfaction regarding the team’s dismal season, calling for the current management to resign. “We are discontent with the management; they should have engaged with us to explore how we can contribute positively to the team. However, since they have failed in this regard, they ought to step down,” they asserted.
Swallows’ Public Relations Officer, Knowledge ‘Bhambo’ Ngwenya, has confirmed that players received their salaries for the past month and acknowledged the concerns raised by fans.
“The players were duly compensated for their April salaries, and we extend our gratitude to the management for ensuring this matter was addressed promptly.
“Regarding the fans who desire changes to the current management committee, we acknowledge their concerns. These issues can be raised through the appropriate channels, such as meetings or via the branch chairpersons.”
Ngwenya also emphasised that the current management committee was appointed by the Advisory Committee. Therefore, any decisions concerning their removal would rest with that structure, who will take into account all relevant factors, including supporters’ concerns.
