SIMUNYE – MTN National First Division (NFD) newcomers Amawele have beaten Lozitha Spurs in the promotion race for the second promotion spot to the top-flight league.
They achieved this by soundly defeating mid-table dwellers All Nations by 4-1 during a MTN NFD game played at Simunye Stadium yesterday.
They join champions Malanti Chiefs in the Premier League next season.
In a must-win match, Mhlengi Mngometulu scored a hat-trick, with two goals coming in the first half of the game. Mbuso Dlamini then joined the scoring spree after the hour mark, while All Nations scored a consolation goal through their Captain, Ntsetselelo Mpaza, in the 71st minute.
Amawele are now promoted to the MTN Premier League for the upcoming season, as they only needed a win to outsmart Spurs, who were also in the promotion race but suffered a 4-3 defeat to champions Malanti Chiefs.
The Msunduza, Mbabane-based side are now guaranteed the E50 000 runner-up prize. Their dominance in a one-sided match yesterday, and even away from their home ground where their fans could have witnessed their promotion, ended the almost 14-year absence of a club from Msunduza in the higher division, following the relegation of Umbelebele FC in May 2011.
The rookies have achieved a maiden top-flight campaign just after one season in the lower division. They were promoted to the NFD a season ago, and this achievement mirrors their accomplishment in the Hhohho Region Football Association (HRFA). After battling against all odds for years in promotion races, they spent just a single season in the Southern Super League, went all the way and won the play-offs.
In an almost similar case, a HRFA relegation-threatened side in the top-flight league, Sidwashini United also spent a single season in the NFD before making their debut campaign this season in the Premier League.
However, on the other hand, All Nations were in their first season in the lower division after being relegated to the Shiselweni Regional Super League from the NFD in the 2022/23 season.
