BHUNYA FOR PLE GAMES
MBABANE – The Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) will soon heave a sigh of relief regarding the dilemma of venues.
This follows a revelation by the organisation’s Chairman, Polycarp Dlamini, that there will be an addition of stadiums to alleviate the current challenges. The organisation is currently forced to host its matches outside of the Mbabane-Manzini corridor, due to the closure of Mavuso Sports Centre and Somhlolo National Stadium. The latter is undergoing a facelift to meet the latest international standards, while the former is closed for maintenance for about six weeks. This has resulted in games being spread across three regions, with most matches played in the Lubombo region, which has the most venues.
Mavuso Sports Centre, which hosted the Trade Fair Cup and the MTN Premier League grand closing, is unavailable for maintenance. Adding to the list of unavailable venues is the Prince of Wales Sports Ground. The PLE has promised that Bhunya Sports Ground will soon be hosting some of their elite matches. Dlamini urged the people in Bhunya to gear up to welcome these thrills, as preparations to host games there are at an advanced stage. The chairman they have engaged the custodians of the venue on its possible refurbishment to meet the standards required to host elite league games. The venue was bustling in yesteryears. It was home to teams led by almost forgotten 2003/04 MTN Premier League champions Mhlambanyatsi Rovers, who now compete in the regions.
Dlamini revealed this while speaking to Eswatini Television, this week. He further disclosed the organisation’s plans to secure grants for teams. He said this is aimed at boosting clubs’ financial sustainability, as most survive on tournament participation fees. Notably, he had earlier identified the need to establish a solidarity fund. The solidarity fund is expected to be funded through the sale of season tickets, which would then see teams receive monthly grants of up to E50 000 in the Premier League and E30 000 in the lower division.
