AHEAD OF THE INGWENYAMA CUP FINALS: GREEN MAMBA WILL DEFEND IT – ‘COOL CAT’
MBABANE – “I know Swallows has been dominating Eswatini football, but currently the boys in green are favourites.”
These were the words of former Manzini Wanderers and Kaizer Chiefs legendary goalkeeper William ‘Cool Cat’ Shongwe, ahead of the much-anticipated Ingwenyama Cup finals today. Defending champions Green Mamba will be battling for the E1 400 000 grand prize against three-time winners Mbabane Swallows in the finals, penned for the Somhlolo National Stadium.
The former national team Sihlangu first choice, in an interview with this publication, asked which club would take the crown, said even though Umkhonto KaShaka had been dominating local football in the past, the Ernest Mavuso-coached side were a better side positioned to take the championship. “As far as the team in a great position to win it, I know that Swallows have been dominating Eswatini football in the past, but currently the boys in green are favourites,” Shongwe said.
When asked why he was giving Inyoka Eluhlazane the crown, the pay-per-view Supersport DStv channel sports commentator said this season’s head-to-head statistics against the red and white capital city giants favour the Correctional Services outfit. He said Sihlangu and former Swallows goal-poacher Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa, midfield maestro Njabulo ‘D4D’ Ndlovu would haunt their previous club tomorrow.
“I think Sikhali will haunt his former club, while D4D will torment them in the belly of the park not forgetting goalkeeper Xolani Gama between the sticks,” he said. Shongwe said even though he was not conviced with the Caleb ‘No nonsense’ Ngwenya charges the likes of Kwakhe ‘Stopper’ Thwala and Siyabonga ‘Gusheshe’ Zwane were players to watch in the finals.
He further said it was always a great honour for him to be part of such a national event, because it was a project for His Majesty the King Mswati III. “You don’t get that many Heads of State getting involved in events of this manner,” Shongwe was reacting to the rumours that he will be part of the panel to broadcast live the finals.
