MBABANE – The Eswatini Royal Insurance Corporation (ESRIC) powered Schools Darts National Championships 2023 had a positive start yesterday at Mavuso Sports Centre.

The championships saw different high schools such as Ngwane Park, Swazi National, Elangeni, Charley’s Wesley, Mhlatane and Lozitha, among others, battling it out for the trophy plus medals which were on display at the host venue. The zeal and determination to hit the bull’s eye was conspicuous as the pupils competed.

The schools were divided into two groups, A and B. The girls’ open category saw Group A dominated by Ngwane Park and Mhlatane High who qualified for the semi-finals. In Group B Charley’s Wesley and Elangeni High qualified for the semi-finals which saw Mhlatane A playing and winning the marathon 501. The other semi-final saw Charley’s Wesley winning the marathon 501 over Mhlatane A. The open boys Group A saw Swazi National A qualifying with Mhlatane High A. Group B saw Ngwane Park A qualifying alongside Elangeni A. The semi-final will see Ngwane Park A playing against Mhlatane A marathon 701. The second semi-final will see Elangeni A playing against Swazi National A.

Eswatini Darts Association (EDA) President Phumlani Ndwandwe said he was happy with the progress after the COVID-19 break. “We appreciate the sponsorship from our sponsor that has been with the association for many years. Many of the players that we have in our league are a product of the schools programme. The sport is developing rapidly and more young people are joining, which is good. We have also seen more ladies joining the sport which is the result of the partnership,” he said. ESRIC has now done this for 13 years with darts.
