MBABANE – Relief!

The above rings true for the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) in terms of venues to host the elite and first division leagues games, as the country’s fourth technical centre takes shape, Mkhuzweni is taking visible strides towards being completed. The Mkhuzweni Technical Centre is the fourth to be constructed by the Eswatini Football Association (EFA), after the Lobamba, Nhlangano and KaLanga technical centres.

This infrastructure development project is fully-funded by the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA). The nearly completed Mkhuzweni Technical Centre will come as good news to the football family, especially the PLE, as they are faced with the shortage of playing venues. Speaking on national radio the Eswatini Broadcasting and information Services (EBIS) Sports Show, hosted by Siphesihle Nxumalo, EFA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Frederick Mngomezulu revealed that the construction of the centre was at its final stages. “The ongoing construction of the technical centre in northern Hhohho’s main aim is to see it completely constructed before the start of the 2023/24 season. In fact, we anticipate that by August this year, the venue will be ready for use,” Mngomezulu said. He highlighted that even though the centre would be used to host elite league games, the main aim of these infrastructure was for the development of the sport at grassroots level, but with the shortage of playing facilities in the country, it was now used as one of the big venues for top flight football.

Mngomezulu said this was the reason some sectors were crying over the shortage of stands and other necessities that were needed in a proper football venue. He said this was the standard of a technical centre. He further revealed that in terms of building a stadium which could meet the FIFA and Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards, they were working together with government, through the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs to forge a way in what could be done. “It is our wish as EFA to one day own a good stadium, even though we know that the country  is faced with financial challenges,” he said. He finally highlighted that it was now difficult to source finances from FIFA as when it wanted to do something for countries, it should all be the 211 member associations (Mas) not just one country.
