MBABANE – He will earnestly smile all the way to the bank.

That is Green Mamba Head Coach Ernest Mavuso, who recently steered the side to the MTN Premier League title.  For the league success, Green Mamba are guaranteed E1 million first prize money. The prize giving will be staged on a date to be confirmed by the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) and sponsors MTN Eswatini. According to classified information sourced by this publication, Mavuso is entitled to 10 per cent of the team’s first prize money if they win any tournament. This is said to be contained in his contract with the team. Worth noting is that this has always been standard procedure for coaches hired by the team, as they are given a share of the prize money as a token of appreciation. This means Mavuso will receive E100 000 as part of his share.

Worth mentioning is that these earnings are more than prize money Premier League teams get for finishing outside the top five on the charts. In a related incident back in 2020, this publication reported that Green Mamba’s then Coach Caleb Ngwenya (now with Mbabane Swallows) collected E240 000 in earnings after helping the Correctional Services outfit win both the Ingwenyama Cup and MTN Premier League in less than two seasons. The first prize of the Ingwenyama Cup was E1.4 million. This meant Ngwenya was entitled to E140 000. Then he was to get E100 000 for winning the league back in 2019. Green Mamba Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mandla Sibiya expectedly chose to play his cards close to his chest. “The policy at Green Mamba is that any contractual agreement with our coach is strictly confidential. Only the coach can disclose that personal information if he wants to,” Sibiya said. Efforts to draw the coach for comments were fruitless by late yesterday.
