‘STOFU’S FUTURE UNCERTAIN AT ‘BUFFS’

MBABANE – Young Buffaloes Head Coach Mandla ‘Stofu’ Dlamini is uncertain of his future with the MTN Premier League runners-up.

Dlamini was given a one-year contract when he took over at the beginning of the season. He went the whole season without suffering a defeat. Out of 26 matches, he recorded 16 victories and 10 draws. However, it was not enough to earn them the title, as they ended up being ‘bridesmaids’ to Green Mamba, who finished three points ahead. The gaffer expressed his uncertainty over his future when the curtain fell on the 2022/2023 MTN Premier League season recently.

“May I request not to comment on that issue because I may complicate things. I still have to meet the management committee (MC) first. What we agreed on has come to an end,” ‘Stofu’ said. He was responding to journalists’ question concerning any changes that might be witnessed with his squad in terms of gearing it up for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Confederation Cup tournament. The 2019 league winners qualified for the continental tournament by virtue of finishing second on the log table. Dlamini felt the only time it would be ideal for a comment was after he knew his fate with the MC. Dlamini’s predecessors at the army side included Sabelo Mnisi and now national team Sihlangu Coach Dominic Kunene.  Dalmini holds the mandatory CAF A Coaching Licence for the CAF competitions, which might work on his favour.

Notably, is that coaches are usually given targets at the beginning of their contracts or seasons. Some see their contracts renewed, while othersget fired even before it reaches the end. Nsingizini Hotspurs were this season seen mutually terminating their marriage with Malawian-born coach Gerald Phiri before the end of his contract on grounds of results that were not forthcoming. Currently in South Africa, Kaizer Chiefs Coach Arthur Zwane’s contract might be terminated during its first year out of three on failure to get silverware.
