MBABANE – The red card ruined everything.

That is the story of Mbabane Swallows on-form and gifted attacking midfielder Felix ‘Fela’ Badenhorst, who will not be among the players in contention for the prestigious MTN Premier League Player of the Month award for the month of February.

MTN Eswatini who sponsors the country’s top leagues, the elite and first division will soon hold the ceremony where the player of the month will receive the trophy for being a cut above the rest in the past month. Badenhorst who is currently leading the top goals scorer chart with 14 league goals and has also won the same accolade for the month of November, has been one of the players who was being considered to take the award for the past month but according to a close source, the red card the player got in the game against Tambuti FC has cost the player the trophy, plus the E6 000 that goes with the award.

“The panel of selectors do not consider players  who got a red card and players who played fewer numbers of games for the period of that month. The  Swallows forward was given an early send off during his side’s 3-1 win against Tambuti after he tackled midfielder Lindelwa Mngometulu on the 42nd minute of the game, which took place behind closed doors at the Prince of Wales Sports Ground early last month,” the source said.

The lanky forward and owner of FB7 Sports Shop, was the key figure in his side’s four wins in the month of February and was able to score four goals in the three games he played, which was the most goals scored by any other player in the league despite the player having missed one game for his side in the past month.

Badenhorst when reached for comment sounded surprised by the development but said he would continue working hard. “I was not aware of this but if it is true I will not lose hope and will continue giving my best for the team,” he said briefly. The Swallows player will be looking to continue with his impressive form when his side take on Madlenya FC tomorrow at the Prince of Wales Sports Ground in a fixture billed for 1:30pm.
