MANZINI – Green Mamba Ladies reigned supreme in the Cervical Cancer Ladies Seven-Aside One Day Tournament when they edged Nsingizini Ladies 1-0 in the final.

A solitary goal by Tibonile Dlamini was enough to seal victory for the Correctional Services side. Dlamini was on target right at the stroke of half-time. Each game was played in two halves of seven minutes apiece. Nsingizini, who are rookies in the country’s women football having joined this season, failed to get a goal despite some impressive build-ups from the back towards goal. They just could not trouble Green Mamba enough at the back and within no time, the final whistle was sounded, much to the joy of the victors.

The Eswatini Women’s Football Association (EWFA) in collaboration with Eswatini National Cancer Control Unit organised the tournament and themed it ‘kick away cancer’. It was aimed at creating awareness to the nation about the different kinds of cancer that exist, some of which is treatable after early diagnosis while some cannot be cured.  Cancer Epidemiologist Xolile Dlamini hinted on their plan to make this an annual tournament that would also be inclusive of various sporting activities. Dlamini thanked EWFA for partnering with them in this initiative and using sport as a drive to raise awareness on cancer screening, prevention and treatment. She said sports played a major role in improving physical health and fitness, which are the best amour against illnesses and diseases.

“The event was a success as we also had people coming in for cervical cancer screening, including the players. We are planning to make this an annual event so that we raise awareness about cancer because it’s not only women who are affected but men too. Thanks to Eswatini Women’s Football Association for allowing us to partner with them,” Dlamini said. Green Mamba Ladies coach and legendary football player Maxwell ‘King Dunga’ Zikalala applauded his team for excelling in the group stages through to the final. Noteworthy is that the Correctional team had lost two of their previous league games to forces rivals Young Buffaloes  and Royal Leopard but the latter two were eliminated in the group stages. Buffaloes crashed out after playing two draws. Meanwhile, gold and silver medals were presented to the champions Green Mamba and runners-up Nsingizini who stunned AS Interladies 1-0 to progress to the final after a stunning group stage display. Green Mamba also received a champions trophy.
