MBABANE – Eswatini netball is unmoved on the latest world charts.

Rankings for December released recently by World Netball saw Eswatini still occupying the 29th spot out of 46. In Africa, Eswatini is ranked eighth ahead of Kenya, Tanzania and Lesotho. The best-ranked netball team in the world is Australia, while fifth-placed South Africa, is Africa’s best ranked team. Fresh from the unsuccessful 2023 World Cup qualifying campaign, Eswatini reclaimed a place on the charts after more than two years. The country’s netballers were no longer ranked due to inactivity, until last month.

Eligible

Over a month ago during the World Cup qualifiers, Eswatini reached the requirement to play six or more matches to be eligible for a global ranking. The number of points earned by a team for any match depends on two factors. The results (won, drawn, lost) and the opponents the result were achieved against. The higher an opponent’s rating, the more points are earned for beating them. Netball is returning to a full international calendar. World Netball will reconsider the number of matches required to earn a world ranking, which was reduced from eight to six as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic and the break in international play.
