IF IT WORKS, WHY IS AFRICA NOT WINNING THE WORLD CUP? ALLY REJECTS SUPPORTERS’ JUJU PLEA

MBABANE – “If juju works in football, why can’t we Africans win the World Cup?”

This question was posed by Mbabane Highlanders Managing Director (MD) Chief Ally Kgomongwe to the club’s supporters, after one elderly supporter requested him to help enhance the performance of the team with the aid of foreign stuff, by consulting with well-known juju men (witch doctors) of the game. The supporter was speaking after Kgomongwe opened the floor for the supporters to make their submissions during their mass meeting at CODEC in Ezulwini last Sunday.

The supporter, who received a huge round of applause from the others, said he was happy about the way the MD was running the club, with the youthful management led by manager Simiso ‘Space’ Jele.“First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you Kgomongwe for the support that you are giving Mbabane Highlanders using your family’s hard-earned money. The team is doing well under your leadership, but as someone who has been with the team for decades now, I think we need to help you in terms of using other stuff that could enhance our team’s performance,” he said.

The MD encouraged the supporters to give him a chance to run the team according to his plans and once he had failed he would then open his door for help. “Remember when I arrived here we won the Telecom Charity Cup without using juju or any muti. On the night before the tournament, I was contacted by one traditional healer, who offered his services and I rejected it as we went on to be crowned the champions,” he said.

Argued

He then asked the supporters that if juju was a catalyst for football, why then was the African continent failing to win the World Cup? He argued that the continent failed even when it was hosted in South Africa in 2010. A few other supporters suggested that they should use renowned Tanzanian witch doctor in the local game but accepted in the end that Kgomongwe as the boss was against it. This is not the first time the South African businessman and politician rejected the use of any witchcraft in the team. It is worth mentioning that the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) frowns on the use of foreign substances during games under their banner.

Regulations

This is contained in Article 10.10 of the 2022/23 MTN Premier League Rules and Regulations, which states that; ‘‘Use of any substance that is alien to, or is foreign to, a football field or stadium is not allowed.’’ However, Highlanders are renowned for using salt in their games, which is believed to neutralise any evil spirits brought about by witchcraft. They have also been charged for the sprinkling of the salt in tunnels under foreign substances use as covered by the above article.
