REFS ‘DEMAND’ COPS AS ‘BULL’ HELD

SITEKI – A misfiring Mbabane Highlanders were denied the second spot after being held to a goalless draw by Tambuti yesterday.

Had the ‘Black Bull’ won, they could have jumped to the second spot with 16 points after eight games. However, the sugar belt side stood their ground to take a point away from Highlanders. This result means Highlanders remain fifth with 14 points, while the opponents moved one place up from the bottom of the log standings with five points after eight outings.

This was a good result for the visitors considering that they had lost their previous match 1-3 to Manzini Wanderers last weekend. For Highlanders, it is not a good draw for the coach and the team in their chase for the E100 000 MTN Premier League first round incentive.  Highlanders had hoped to redeem themselves from the 2-1 defeat at the hands of Manzini Sea Birds.  Following the Mavuso Sports Centre mayhem involving Highlanders supporters a fortnight ago, the match was played in an empty stadium as a DC verdict banned the home team supporters for one game.

Since the fans attacked a referee during the Mavuso mayhem, match officials delayed the kick-off between the Highlanders and Tambuti clash as they wanted police’s presence at the stadium.  Police arrived 22 minutes later and the game proceeded. Coming to the game, Highlanders were the better side as Captain Philani Mkhonto, Mfanufikele ‘Fash’ Ndzimandze, Kenneth ‘Mashaba’ Moloto and Bonginkhosi ‘Manyovu’ Dlamini all could have scored, but their attempts were in vain. This result does not augur well for Highlanders given that they play their bitter rivals Mbabane Swallows next, Swallows are playing their match against Royal Leopard today.
