MBABANE – It was a memorable week for bodybuilder Alex Famonou who scooped gold medals in two bodybuilding shows held in Las Vegas in the United States of America (USA) over the past weekend.

The Cameroonian bodybuilder is a businessman running the Yonda Super Fit Tyres Company that has branches in Mbabane, Manzini and Nhlangano. He did not only win gold in the classic men and bodybuilding men line-up, but earned his Pro Card in both categories, allowing him to compete in any International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) competition. He is well-known in the bodybuilding fraternity in the country and has worked closely with 2022 Physical Culture Association (PCA) champion Arnaldo Barbosa, whom he assisted with sponsorship of the previous Barbosa Classic Show held in 2021.

The international athlete is off to one of the world’s grand stages; the Natural Olympia scheduled for November 8, 2022. Excited upon returning to the competitive stage after taking a two-year break due to COVID-19, Famonou thanked his coach Brandan Gerdes who worked hard supported him through his journey. “I got my Natural Olympia qualification. It’s a dream come true. I’ve learnt over and over again that nothing is impossible when you set your heart and mind to it. I’m so excited and grateful and I’m looking forward to competing in the Natural Olympia in November. I want to take this opportunity to thank my coach and my teacher, Brandan Gerdes. We have been working for over two years and haven’t done a competition until now because of COVID-19. I want to thank my special boss lady Jasum; she’s a great support system. With her, it’s almost impossible to fail. It was amazing and refreshing to be surrounded by natural athletes. It’s time to get back to the gym and get better for Natural Olympia,” Famonou posted on his Facebook page.

Congratulations poured in for the international champion and Barbosa, among local athletes, also joined in the celebration and wished him the best of luck as he approached the Olympia stage. “Winning any competition is the most wonderful accomplishment in life. It is an energising time throughout life. You have to spend time with your family, but only the great ones will understand how hard it is to be next to your loved ones while you are on diet. Great achievement my brother Alex; you won your pro card, now the next step is Mr Olympia in some few months,” Barbosa said.
