MBABANE – The countdown to one of the Eswatini’s most exciting and challenging road races has begun.

That is the returning MTN Khemani Cycle Classic, which is known for its thrilling route. The route is headlined by steep climbs. After a two-year freeze caused by the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, all odds lead to Mabovini in Mankayane on November 13 for the 2022 instalment of the race. Action gets underway at 6am. The race will be headlined by a 95km event, which will accommodate strictly men. According to information sourced from the event’s online sites, the rest of the cyclists will be accommodated in races that are 60km, 25km and 5km long. The shortest event is a children’s mountain bike (MTB) event and participation is free.

Deadline

Entry fees for the rest of the races range between E150 and E200. Entries are already open. The deadline for registration is on November 9. Outstanding cyclists will get a share from a purse that will be announced in due course. Meanwhile, visiting Grant Edmiston won the 95km men’s race with a time of 02:46:22 hours when the race was last staged in 2019. Another visitor in Mpho Moloi clocked 02:59:10 hours to rank second, with Eswatini’s very own Gcina Banda completing the list of the podium finishers. Banda, who is also a former national team cyclist, had clocked 02:59:59 hours. The women’s event was won by Dinize Wilsch. She reached the winning point after 04:17:52 hours.
