MATSAPHA – Athletics Eswatini (AE) targets at least 1 100 runners to participate in the inaugural Vusi Masuku Half Marathon to be held in the next three weeks.

As of yesterday afternoon, 220 people had already registered. The numbers were confirmed by AE Communications Officer Victor ‘Mavikane’ Dlamini. The race, which will be an annual event, will be held in honour of the late senior police officer Superintendent Vusi Masuku. It takes centre stage on October 8, 2022. The race will start and finish at the Police Academy in Matsapha, which was previously known as the Police College.

Fee

Registration fee is E50 per head across the three races. The race will feature 21km, 10km and 5km events. Individual runners can register at the Eswatini Sports and Recreation Council (ESRC) offices in Mbabane and at Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) in Lobamba at the OlympAfrica Centre. Club members were advised to register at their respective teams and submit their entries as a unit. The race will start and finish at  the Police Academy. The race is an initiative of AE in collaboration with Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) in honour of Masuku, who was a staunch supporter of sports.

Launch

During the launch event held last week at the Police Academy, it transpired that the proceeds from the event would go towards orphaned and vulnerable children who were supported by Masuku. “We want to carry on the legacy left behind by Babe Vusi Masuku who was active in sports, supporting athletes, sports organisations and also helped the needy. Companies and individuals who wish to contribute towards this initiative are welcome to come forward. Entries are coming in and we hope to reach our target of 1 100 participants,” Dlamini said. He added that monetary prizes for winners would depend on the amount of sponsorship and donations, but guaranteed all participants would receive medals after completing.
