MBABANE – The Eswatini Cricket Association (ECA) has started paving their way to the 2024 International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T-20 World Cup Qualifiers to be held in Rwanda.

The sub-regional qualifiers for Group A will take place from November 15 to 24, 2022 and Group B qualifiers start from November 30 to December 6, 2022. Eswatini is in Group A alongside Botswana, Lesotho, Ghana, Gambia, Kenya and Malawi. Group B has Rwanda, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, St Helena, Seychelles and Sierra Leon. The winners for both qualifying events will then progress to the finals in 2023 where Uganda are already placed after they could not advance from the 2022 T20 World Cup Global Qualifier B Tournament held in Zimbabwe in July.

The preparations started off with the selection of a 28-member preliminary cricket national team squad with the help of the coaches commission (CC) that was responsible for players’ selection. ECA Tournament Director Zenzele Mazibuko said a final 14-member squad would be selected after a fitness test to be held on Saturday at Malkerns Sports and Country Club. Mazibuko said the selection was performance-based, as only high-performing players would make it to the final squad. “The 28 preliminary squad resumed training on September 17, 2022. The squad members have to agree and accept the ECA code of conduct to undergo and pass various tests and must meet the player eligibility criteria. Successful players will make it to the final 14 that will represent the country in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Group A Qualifiers in Africa,” Mazibuko said.
