MBABANE – The eagerly-awaited kick-off of the 2022/23 MTN Premier League season is in 15 days’ time (October 1).

This was announced by the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Kenneth Makhanya. He was speaking during the launch the new E19.5 million three-year package for the MTN League at Sigwaca House in Mbabane yesterday.

Delayed

The start of the MTN National First Division, according to Makhanya, will be delayed following the belated submission of the legal documents.
“We are targeting to finish the season in May next year. We won’t be affected by the FIFA World Cup in November/December,” he said.
Makhanya assured that his office would ensure that the hosting of the COSAFA Under-20 Championships at Somhlolo National Stadium and Mavuso Sports Centre in the period October 6-16 this year will not completely affect their schedule.

Break

A break is inevitable next month, as there are two weekends allocated for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) inter-club games. By that time, Royal Leopard and Mbabane Highlanders, who are in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup, in that order, are expected to be playing second round matches if they pass through the first hurdle this week. Meanwhile, the opening round fixtures were confirmed late yesterday. They are headlined by the match-up between Mbabane Swallows and Young Buffaloes, who finished third and fourth, respectively. They meet at the King Sobhuza II Memorial Stadium in Nhlangano on Sunday, October 2 at 3pm. Newcomers, Madlenya and Seven Dreams, on the other hand, will begin their life in top flight football on the first day of the new month against Manzini Wanderers and Green Mamba, respectively.
