MBABANE – A golf tournament in honour of the late veteran golfers, Augusto Quintella and Graham Byars, is in the pipeline.

The two pensioners, who died last month after battling cancer, were the oldest members of the Manzini Golf Club that is led by President Jacquies Potgieter. The pair featured prominently in club tournaments including the weekly Dups Herbal Insurance-sponsored Leg of Lamb Golf Tournament, Mashayinkonjane Monthly Mug, Eswatini Gas Solution Tournament and Dada’s Cell, among others. “At Manzini Golf Club we are all about family and hosting the Memorial Golf Day is the right thing to do. It is just like losing any family member. We don’t have any kind of sponsorship yet, but the golfers are working on it and once we put everything together, we will announce the date and we hope to host it in October,” Potgieter said.

Captain Wakie Lawrence said the death of the golfers was a huge loss for the club that is known for creating a family bond among its members as well as investing in the development of the sport. Speaking after last week’s Dups Insurance Leg of Lamb Golf Tournament that was won by Mfanzile Dlamini with an impressive 38 points after 18-holes, Lawrence said the deceased golfers had a positive impact in the club and had special responsibilities that contributed to the growth and development of the club. “Quintella always volunteered to do repairs of the golf tractor and mower. He also put up the golf flags on the golf course and ensured that the greens were well maintained. Graham Byars was responsible for and always kept the golfers in order because he was highly disciplined and strict. They are greatly missed and Manzini Golf Club members will all contribute towards the Memorial Golf Day,” Lawrence said. Golfers from clubs across the country were invited to participate in the event in honour of the late golfers.
