MBABANE – Talk about a timely psychological boost for Sihlangu.

Burkina Faso will have to do without first choice goalkeeper, Herve Koffi, when they visit Eswatini for the 2023 TOTALEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifers. The two nations will lock horns for the first time in their football history in an official fixture today at the FNB Stadium in South Africa, kick-off time 3pm. ‘The Stallions’,  as the Burkina Faso national team are fondly known, will be minus the Europe-based goalkeeper when they meet an Eswatini side, highly motivated after holding Togo 2-2 on Friday away. On the other hand, the Stallions are equally motivated as they beat Cape Verde 2-0 to claim the top spot of Group B.  Today’s showdown, as a result, is a top-of-the-table clash. The Burkinabe, as they prepare to take on the Dominic Kunene-led side, confirmed in a statement that Koffi, who plays for Belgian club Charleroi, would not be involved in the second game of the qualifiers.

The player was released to attend to family matters back in Belgium. “Harve will urgently have to join his family in the aftermath of the match against the ‘Blue Sharks’, as the Cape Verde national team is known in football circles that we won 2-0,” reads part of the statement. The 25-year-old was on the post for the Stallions in their Group B opener at Stade de Marrakech  this past Friday as he kept a clean sheet. The statement further confirmed that despite Koffi leaving camp, Coach Hubert Velud will choose from Aboubacar Sawadoga, Killian Nikiema and Noureddine Balora.

Meanwhile, Sihlangu Coach Dominic Kunene said his players were geared up for the game against Burkina Faso. “Our preparations are going well so far. All my players are well as we have no injuries and they are ready for the game tomorrow (today),” Kunene said. The former Young Buffaloes gaffer said with or without Koffi, the Burkinabe was a strong squad and dwelling on the absence of their vice-captain would be a huge mistake. Eswatini are going to this match occupying the second spot of Group B with a point from their first match. They trail the Stallions by two points, who are on the pole position.
