MBABANE – Former Eswatini international player and current Mbabane Swallows midfielder, Felix ‘Fela’ Badenhorst has been named among the ‘big boys’ of the region.

The veteran midfielder is rated among the top 10 Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Cup legends of all time. The former Mbombela United captain and now Mbabane Swallows midfielder is one of the players who have lit up the showpiece with their skill and signed their names in the history over the last 25 years. The regional showpiece is slated for South Africa, Durban from July 5 to 17, 2022, where the new generation of heroes will be unearthed.

According to COSAFA, Badenhorst is rated number four in the list of legends, as he is the most successful goal scorer in the history of the tournament having netted nine times. The former Jomo Cosmos player burst into the COSAFA scene at the 2016 edition, which was held in Namibia, where he scored five goals. The COSAFA page also highlighted that ‘Fela’ was once on the wishlist of South African giants, Mamelodi Sundowns in his much younger days, however, he turned out for Jomo Cosmos and AS Vita from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He also had spells back in South Africa, with the now defunct Mbombela United and DStv Premiership side TS Galaxy before the lanky midfielder returned home to play for Mbabane Swallows.

The former Sihlangu skipper said being recognised by COSAFA was one of the greatest highlights of his football career. “I am very happy, as I wasn’t expecting to be listed among the top 10 COSAFA legends and I would like to thank all the coaches that gave me the opportunity to represent my country internationally,” Badehorst said. He urged the country’s youngsters to thrive to be better players and when given an opportunity they should grab it with both hands. “Playing in the COSAFA Cup opens many doors in one’s football career,” he said. He further said many football players launched their careers on the platform that was provided to them by COSAFA.
