MBABANE – Denver Sundowns has found their ‘Big Boy’ in Zimbabwe’s Mawiwi, the Times Sports Desk has reliably gathered.

Bigboy Mawiwi, the former Harare City coach, was expected to arrive in the country last night. Sources in Zimbabwe confided in the Times Sports Desk that Mawiwi beat his fellow countryman, Darlington Dodo, for the coaching position at ‘Basop IKappa Kappa’. Dodo, a former coach at Sundowns, was recently sacked by Caps United following the ‘Green Machine’ dismal performance in the Chibuku Super Cup. Dodo had taken the reins in 2019, replacing Championship-winning coach Lloyd Chitembwe Chitembwe.

“Sundowns were impressed by Mwiwi’s credentials and the fact that he loves working with the juniors as they are big on development. He left Harare this afternoon via South African Airways after Sundowns bought an air-ticket for him,” our informed source in Harare, Zimbabwe said. The source further stated that besides the two Zimbabwean coaches, Dodo and Mwiwi, Sundowns had also approached two other foreign coaches, one from South Africa and another from Portugal.

“But definitely Mwiwi ticks all the boxes. He will be unveiled at Sundowns before the end of the week,” our source insisted. Efforts to get a comment from Mwiwi proved futile as his mobile phone was switched off. Sundowns Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Elvis Dube could only confirm that they would have a new coach before the end of the week. “By Friday, we will have a new coach because we are still finalising a lot of things including his paperwork. I can only say he is a foreign coach and will watch our league game this weekend from the grandstand,” Dube said.

He also confirmed they had shortlisted three coaches; one from Zimbabwe, another from Portugal and one from South Africa. “As soon as he arrives, we will unveil him,” Dube said. The Sundowns coaching post was left vacant last week when the incumbent Siyabonga Bhembe rejoined Mbabane Swallows as assistant coach to Ghanaian mentor, Christopher Ennin.
