MBABANE – Eswatini is ranked among the top 10 cycling nations in Africa.

Eswatini Cycling Association (ECA) interim committee Chairman Mbusi Motsa said the Fast and the Furious national championship which was held in June played a major role in the current ranking. “We are very proud of this achievement as an interim committee it shows that we are headed in the right direction towards improving the sport in the country,” Motsa said.

He said the national championships were recognised by the International Cycling Union (UCI), which is the international body for cycling. The New Com Wheels Cycling Club cyclist, Motsa said they would leave the office with their heads held high after this achievement. The term of office as an interim committee ends in November. “Our main task was to work on drafting the association’s Constitution which we did and was endorsed by the relevant stakeholders,” he said.

He went on to say that the association would hold its elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) on November, 14 this year. “We are currently working on the nominations and once we are done with that exercise we are going to name the candidates and the positions that would be voted for,” he said. Motsa said the new committee that would be elected into the office would be the one to take cycling to the next level, as they (interim committee) had played their part.

According to the 2021 season top cycling nations in Africa which was released by UCI, the country is ranked position nine with 136 points ahead of Morocco, who complete the top 10 cycling nations in Africa with 133 points.
